In June of 2009, following a legislative change, the Supreme Court of the State of New Delhi decided not to continue to apply article 377 of the penal code, an article of puritan moral of the Victorian era, in which it interprets sodomy as unnatural, anal sex with men and women and animals. Unconventional sexual relations are no longer a crime and therefore no longer punishable. Also a third gender is recognized, the caste of the Eunuchs and transexuals begin to have their rights before the law and acquiered new laws.
The Eunuchs, known as Hijras, are gregarious and they engage themselves mostly in extortion and prostitution. They take in the effeminate sons and hermaphrodites that are given away by their families. It is calculated that there are several million of Hijras in India.
The project was brought about during the spring of 2010 in the state of Tamil Nadu. Once a year in the village of Koovagam, Hijras from all over India journey to the temple of Koothandavar, dedicated to a bisexual deity called Aravan. The festival lasts several days, started of with a performance of marraige rites with the deity, singing and dancing endlessly. The days to follow they commemorate the death of Koothandavar through mourning ceremonies accompanied with dancing and crying. At night they hustle and prostitute themselves in the hotels in the surrounding towns.
